During a meeting on Friday morning, the Grayville City Council agreed to assist Chappy’s Restaurant with the demolition of a property located at 116 South Main Street. City Attorney Jay Walden discussed the matter with Chappy’s attorney, Jonathan Turpin, following a request for the removal of a building next to the restaurant. During the demolition, a sewer line was damaged, leading to an estimated $34,000 in repairs, which the restaurant owners are currently liable for due to insurance refusal to cover the costs. An ongoing claim may allow the city to recover some funds if Chappy’s wins a settlement. Commissioner Andi Ford proposed a grant of $17,700, representing 50% of the demolition and repair costs. Commissioner Scott Browning suggested the idea of a small interest loan instead. The council also considered Chappy’s long-standing presence in the community and the fact that the business is not located in a TIF district. Ultimately, the council voted unanimously to grant Chappy’s $17,700.

Additionally, the council voted to support improvements at the Veterans Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery, where volunteers have raised over $4,600 through memorial brick purchases and donations. The commissioners approved $3,400 from motel tax and tourism funding for further enhancements.

Mark Smith of Sam’s Realty received $2,500 in TIF assistance, and the city leaders also approved pay estimates of $1,044.21 for sidewalk replacement and $15,664.47 for watermain improvements.

In her report, Commissioner Andi Ford expressed her intention to introduce an ordinance aimed at preventing out-of-town residents from using city dumpsters for trash, possibly imposing fines for violations.
