ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS PREPARE FOR LAME DUCK SESSION AND POTENTIAL GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION

By Mark Wells Jan 2, 2025 | 5:55 AM

As Illinois lawmakers prepare to return to the State Capitol this weekend, attention is focused on the implications of the upcoming lame duck session for gun control laws. A new proposal introduced during last month’s fall veto session aims to expand Illinois’ Red Flag Law, primarily to clarify and strengthen its application for domestic violence survivors. Additionally, two other measures are expected to be introduced: one requiring quicker reporting of lost and stolen firearms, and another mandating that firearms be securely locked under certain circumstances.

When the General Assembly reconvenes in Springfield on Saturday, January 4th, there is potential for new bills to be passed from both chambers before the 103rd Legislature concludes on January 7th. Following this, new legislation can be filed starting January 8th, when the new General Assembly is officially seated.

In a separate legislative development, statewide veterans meeting specific conditions will no longer be charged a building permit fee for home improvements. This measure ensures that veterans with disabilities or their caregivers are exempt from fees for necessary modifications to accommodate their disabilities, with local governments responsible for verifying the proof of need.
