Weather Update

Wayne County and surrounding areas have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning by the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky.  The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday.  Forecasters are expecting snow to begin early Sunday morning and eventually mix with some sleet before changing to a sleet, snow and possibly freezing rain mixture by Sunday afternoon, and then switching back to snow Sunday night and into Monday morning.  Total accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are currently expected in our area.  Areas to the south are under an Ice Storm Warning, where more freezing rain and sleet is expected, possibly up to a half inch.  Significant power outages are a possibility.  Windy conditions are also expected on Sunday.

Once the precipitation ends, a blast of cold air is expected to dominate the area for next week, with temperatures remaining below freezing, keeping the snow and ice around for a while.

Area rivers remain on the high side this morning.  The Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 24.01 feet, more than seven feet above flood stage.  At Clay City the stage is 14.78 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  At Carmi the river is at 24.83 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 9.01 feet, below the 15-foot flood stage.  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 13.04 feet.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 12.82 feet.

The extended weather forecasts are indicating below normal temperatures and precipitation continuing through at least January 17th.
