MONDAY NOON WINTER STORM UPDATE

By Mark Wells Jan 6, 2025 | 11:54 AM

Southern Illinois is currently facing hazardous winter weather conditions due to a winter storm that began early Sunday morning, resulting in significant snowfall and ice accumulation. WFIW studios report  early this (Monday) morning approximately 8 inches of snow on the ground in addition to receiving around an inch of fresh snow earlier this morning complicating accurate measurements due to ice. Power outages have occurred due to ice buildup on transmission lines and Wayne-White Electric Cooperative crews are actively working to restore service.  There are numerous closing and cancellations and you can check those out under the Closing & Delays link on our website, wfiwradio.com.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Illinois State Police warn of dangerous travel conditions across the state, citing several inches of snow, heavy icing, high winds, and severe cold. IDOT has mobilized over 1,800 trucks and equipment to treat roads and respond to weather emergencies. They advise the public to stay put if possible, and if travel is necessary, to drive cautiously—slowing down, increasing braking distances, and maintaining safe distances between vehicles.

For ongoing updates, individuals can check road conditions at GettingAroundIllinois.com and follow IDOT on social media platforms like Facebook and X.
