Mt. Vernon City Firefighters reported no injuries following two separate fires over the weekend that caused extensive damage to two homes.
The first incident occurred early Sunday morning at the residence of Brett Bryant, located at 704 North 8th Street. A neighbor noticed flames erupting through the roof and promptly alerted the occupants, allowing them to escape safely. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames, and their efforts were hampered by a snowstorm in progress. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid at the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn fire departments stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in case of additional emergencies. Hamilton County Fire was also called in for rehabilitation support due to the adverse weather conditions. Firefighters received the initial call at 6:35 AM and remained on the scene for nearly five hours.
Earlier that weekend, on Saturday night, firefighters responded to a blaze at 8019 North Fourth Street. Although the home was not supposed to be occupied, reports indicated that squatters had been staying there. Upon arrival at 11:16 PM, firefighters encountered flames shooting from the single-story structure. The fire caused significant damage, and crews worked until 1:30 AM to bring it under control.
