Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department just a little after 6 o’clock Thursday night responded to a report of a vehicle theft. The incident occurred when a citizen stopped to assist someone stranded along Richview Road, just east of N. Hart Lane in Jefferson County.

Upon arriving in the area, a sheriff’s deputy found the stolen vehicle off Richview Road, near its intersection with Grand Road. The deputy located the suspect at the site of a crash and attempted to apprehend him. During this attempt, the suspect shot himself.  The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse.  Fortunately, the deputy was unharmed in the incident.

Additional assistance was provided by other deputies, officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Illinois State Police troopers, firefighters from both Mt. Vernon and Irvington Fire Departments, and EMS personnel from Litton Ambulance.

Investigators from the Illinois State Police arrived to process the scene and examine the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. Detectives from both the Sheriff’s Office and the Mt. Vernon Police Department are collaborating on the investigation into the stolen vehicle.
