Customers of Ameren are being alerted to a scam reportedly preying on customers who were without power after last weekend’s ice storm.
Media reports say several small business owners and one southern Illinois sheriff have alerted to the scam. The scammers are using their typical threats of shutting off electric service if an immediate payment is not made within a 60 to 90 minute time period.
Ameren says anyone receiving such a call demanding immediate payment should ask for a call back number, and once they receive that, to call Ameren Illinois at 1-800-755-5000. Customers should also never give out personal information over the phone.
