A 45-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been found guilty by a Jefferson County Court jury of first-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Robert Lewis was charged in connection with the death of 62-year-old Thomas Taylor, who was struck by Lewis’s pickup truck in an alley off the 2800 block of Veterans Memorial Drive following an argument in March of last year. After the incident, Lewis fled the scene. Taylor, who was working on his vehicle at the time, was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
Sentencing for Lewis is set for March 20th. He faces a potential sentence of 20 to 60 years for the first-degree murder charge, which must be served in full, while the charge of leaving the scene of an accident carries a sentence of two to 14 years, with 85 percent required to be served.
Jury selection for the trial began on Tuesday, and the jury received the case on Friday at 11:10 AM, delivering a verdict about three hours later. A charge of aggravated DUI had previously been severed from the other charges.
