RAY TATE SEEKS TO WITHDRAW GUILTY PLEA IN CLINTON COUNTY COURT

By Mark Wells Jan 31, 2025 | 11:57 AM

Ray Tate appeared via Zoom from the Menard Correctional Center in Chester on Wednesday morning as he sought to withdraw his guilty plea related to charges stemming from his capture in Clinton County.

In October of last year, Tate pleaded guilty to a Class-X felony charge of home invasion, resulting in a 30-year prison sentence, which will be served in addition to the life sentence he is already serving. Tate claims he was coerced into this plea and is also alleging ineffective assistance of counsel.

The judge in Clinton County appointed a public defender to represent Tate. During the hearing, the defense attorney informed the judge that he has received a copy of the transcript but has not yet had the opportunity to review it. As a result, the judge scheduled another status hearing for March 26.

Tate is currently serving a life sentence for the December 29, 2021, murder of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley.
