Tuesday just before 12 noon, Jefferson County Deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm at 1504 N. Old Centralia Lane, Mt. Vernon, IL. Before deputies arrived, it was reported that the suspect had fled the scene in a silver Toyota Corolla. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the victim, who did not require medical treatment.
While en route to assist, a deputy spotted the suspect vehicle leaving Casey’s General Store at Salem Road and George Street in Mt. Vernon. The Corolla then proceeded east on George Street. The deputy followed the vehicle and conducted a felony traffic stop on N. Pumphouse Road near N. Morton Lane. Additional Jefferson County Deputies, Mt. Vernon Police Officers, Illinois State Police Troopers, and investigators from the Secretary of State Police responded to assist.
The Mt. Vernon Police Department deployed its armored Bearcat to support the felony stop. Upon arrival, the suspect attempted to flee by ramming the Bearcat, causing severe damage to his vehicle while the Bearcat sustained only minor damage. Officers quickly boxed in the Corolla to prevent further escape attempts. After several minutes of verbal commands, the driver, identified as 24-year-old Johnathan L. Ames-Bourn of Highland, IL, surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the vehicle uncovered additional evidence. No officers were injured during the arrest.
Ames-Bourn was transported to the Jefferson County Jail, where he awaits his pre-trial detention hearing. He faces multiple charges, including:
Armed Robbery
Aggravated Domestic Battery
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon
Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
