By Mark Wells Mar 3, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Wayne City Fire Department and Wayne City Ambulance personnel responded to a report of an attached garage on fire Sunday morning at 12:07 at 285 County Road 400 East southwest of Wayne City.  Fire Chief, Scott Clark says when units arrived on the scene, they were advised by a neighbor that there was one possibly two people still inside.  Fire crews began searching bedrooms above the garage and in the home.  An unresponsive male was located in the home and removed where life saving measures were started by Firemen, Illinois State Police, Wayne County Deputies and Wayne City EMS personnel.  The male subject was transported to a hospital where he later died.  Wayne City Fire was assisted at the scene by Dahlgren, McLeansboro and Jefferson County Fire Departments.  Webber and Mt. Vernon Fire Departments provided coverage at the station in case of another call.  The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, but is NOT considered suspicious at this time.
