Illinois State Police K9 DuQ has been outfitted with a bullet and stab-resistant vest thanks to a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest, sponsored by the non-profit organization, is embroidered with the message:
“Born to Love – Trained to Serve – Loyal Always.”
Established in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing protective vests and support to law enforcement K9s nationwide. The custom-fitted, U.S.-made body armor is National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. To date, the organization has donated over 5,918 vests worth $6.9 million to K9 officers across all 50 states, made possible through corporate and private donations.
The program is available to certified law enforcement K9s that are at least 20 months old and actively serving. K9s with expired vests are also eligible. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s across the U.S., the need for protective gear remains high.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible donations in any amount, while a $1,050 donation sponsors one vest, valued at $1,800 with a five-year warranty. Each vest weighs between 4-5 pounds.
