Illinois lawmakers advanced a bill aimed at prohibiting public school students from using cell phones and other wireless devices during class time. The measure, inspired by Governor JB Pritzker’s call for such a policy, cleared a Senate committee and may soon reach the full Senate for a vote.
Senate Bill 2427, sponsored by Senator Christina Castro, D-Elgin, would require all school boards to implement policies banning wireless communication devices during instructional periods, though it would exempt school-issued devices and those necessary for educational purposes. Exceptions would be made for emergencies, health threats, and for students with disabilities.
Supporters argue that similar policies have effectively reduced distractions, enhanced focus, and improved student safety. Castro emphasized that the bill sets a minimum standard, allowing districts to adopt stricter rules if desired. Schools would need to have these policies in place by the 2026-27 academic year.
