Southern Illinois was hit with severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening, and forecasters warn that more are possible by Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Paducah reported downed power poles in Olmsted and roof damage to a high school west of New Grand Chain. Hail blanketed Mt. Vernon for approximately five minutes.
The region was placed under a tornado watch, and several severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued.
An approaching cold front could bring more isolated strong to severe storms as early as late Tuesday night, particularly in the northern and western areas of the region. Southern Illinois and southeast Missouri are under a Marginal Risk for severe weather late Tuesday night. All types of severe weather are possible, including brief heavy downpours.
A significant severe weather outbreak is expected Wednesday and Wednesday night, with the entire region under an Enhanced Risk for severe thunderstorms. Large to very large hail, widespread damaging winds, and long-track, strong tornadoes are all possible.
