The National Weather Service in Paducah warns that ongoing showers and storms have already produced 2 to 5 inches of rainfall across much of the region, with some isolated areas receiving up to 8 inches. An additional 4 to 8 inches of rain is forecast through Sunday, creating a particularly dangerous flooding and flash flooding situation. A FLOOD WATCH remains in effect through Sunday morning with excessive runoff that may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas with the possibility of creeks and streams may overflowing their banks.
Significant street flooding is expected, and homes and businesses may be affected. Roadways near creeks and culverts may wash away.
Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to develop in southeast Missouri this evening, spreading to southern Illinois and west Kentucky with potential hazards including; very large hail, strong, long-track tornadoes and damaging winds.
The severe weather threat will diminish later tonight, particularly after midnight.
Saturday Forecast:
Widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will continue, with flash flooding likely across the region. Catastrophic flooding is expected in portions of west Kentucky and potentially far southeast Missouri. Most area rivers are projected to rise above flood stage into next week.
Monitor local forecasts and stay alert for Flash Flood and Flood Warnings and be prepared to take action when flooding occurs. If you encounter a flooded roadway, remember: turn around, don’t drown.
