WAYNE CITY SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT RESIGNS FOLLOWING REPRESENTATION CONFLICT

Joe Coy, the President of the Wayne City School Board, has officially resigned following ongoing conflicts over district policies regarding township representation. The resignation was announced Tuesday night amid debates about Coy’s eligibility to serve as president under district rules.

The controversy arose when some citizens questioned whether Coy was in violation of a policy that limits board membership to a maximum of three members from the same township. With less than two weeks remaining before the Consolidated Election, discussions intensified, especially after Coy did not attend a recent board meeting. A vacancy notice was subsequently issued by the district to fill the chair until the next election in April 2027.

Despite Coy’s resignation, concerns persisted among community members, with some alleging he had consulted a lawyer on the matter.   Reports indicate Coy’s home residence had changed months prior to his voter registration in September 2024.

The district had previously paid $3,400 in attorney fees in March when the issue first surfaced, covering legal consultations and contractual discussions. Following Coy’s resignation, the board announced that the position must be filled by June 13 to ensure proper representation.

The resignation marks a significant change for the school board as the district works to resolve the representation issue ahead of upcoming elections.
