The USDA Crop and Progress Report was released yesterday (Monday) as planting activity accelerates across the state, earlier planted corn and soybean crops are beginning to emerge.
According to the report, there were 3.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 27th. The statewide average temperature was 59.6 degrees, which is 3.8 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.10 inches, exceeding the normal by 0.26 inches. Topsoil moisture was rated as 1% very short, 10% short, 66% adequate, and 23% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 2% very short, 14% short, 66% adequate, and 18% surplus.
Corn planting reached 16%, compared to the 5-year average of 26%. Corn emergence was at 2%, compared to the 5-year average of 3%.
Soybean planting reached 22%, slightly above the 5-year average of 20%. Soybean emergence was at 4%, compared to the 5-year average of 2%.
Winter wheat headed reached 16%, compared to the 5-year average of 12%. The condition of winter wheat was rated as 2% very poor, 4% poor, 37% fair, 49% good, and 8% excellent.
