Wilbur R. Lawrence, 86, of Fairfield, Illinois, passed away on April 28, 2025, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Wilbur was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on December 4, 1938, to Wilbur and Elenore (Abbot) Lawrence. Wilbur was a proud member of the United States Navy and while stationed in Norfolk, West Virginia, a friend introduced him to Mary Brown. Wilbur and Mary were united in marriage on August 15, 1959, in Wilson, North Carolina.

Upon Wilbur’s discharge from the Navy in 1960 he began his career as a Tool & Die Supervisor with General Motors Corporation. He retired from GM after 32 years; however, he continued to work for the company as needed. Wilbur was the ultimate jack of all trades. He was a skilled carpenter and electrician who very much enjoyed working with his hands. His talents allowed him to repair or build almost anything. Wilbur was a member of the American Legion.

Wilbur is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Mary; two daughters, Donna Sager and Rhonda (Robert) Thompson both of Fairfield, IL and a son, Steven Lawrence of North Carolina; four grandchildren: Brandy Thomason, Ryan Sager, Amber Smiley, and Ashley Smiley; and seven great-grandchildren: Jaeda Thomason, Ryland Thomason, Ellyse Thomason, Kayla Sager, Kami Sager, Khloe Sager, and Kylie Sager.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Ronald and Beverly.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield. Graveside funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield with Military Honors provided by Anthony Wayne Post 176, American Legion and Wayne Memorial Post 4535, VFW.
