A barn that contained an apartment on the Richard Jones property at 10099 East Richview Road, west of Mt. Vernon, was heavily damaged in a fire Tuesday morning.
Jefferson Fire officials say the 30-by-40-foot pole barn was fully engulfed when they arrived after a passerby spotted the blaze. The barn was used for storage and included a small apartment in the back for Jones’ son.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Firefighters received the call at 9:45 a.m. and were on the scene for approximately an hour and a half.
The Jones family was not at home at the time, and there were no injuries reported.
Jefferson Fire received mutual aid from the Mt. Vernon city, Kell, and Centralia Fire Protection Districts. The Wayne City and Salem Fire Departments stood by at the Jefferson Fire station in case of another emergency.
