The National Weather Service sent a survey team into Wayne County Thursday to assess the damage from the Tuesday afternoon severe storm that hit the area. The Weather Service in Paducah says the damage in Wayne County was from straight-line winds and NO tornado. Officials say the storm hit the southeast part of Fairfield at 3:13 pm. Widespread wind damage of 70 to 100 mph occurred across portions of Wayne County to the south and east of Fairfield. Dozens of trees were snapped or uprooted. Numerous homes received shingle or siding damage. Many outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. The area of more concentrated damage began near County Road 500N to the west of County Road 1650N and continued to the east-northeast. The Burkitt-Laws Lake area near Hwy 45 received some of the more significant damage and so did the Merriam Crossroads area along IL Hwy 15 to the east of Fairfield.
