IDNR, CONSERVATION POLICE URGE SAFETY WHILE BOATING OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND

By Mark Wells May 21, 2025 | 5:54 AM

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Illinois Conservation Police are reminding boaters to prioritize safety while enjoying Illinois waterways over the Memorial Day weekend.

Officials are urging all boaters to wear life jackets at all times when on the water and to never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Wearing a life jacket and staying sober can make the difference between a fun day on the water and a tragedy,” said a spokesperson for the IDNR.

According to state data, there were 63 reportable boating accidents in Illinois last year, resulting in 15 fatalities and 32 injuries.

The IDNR and Conservation Police will be increasing patrols throughout the holiday weekend to promote safe boating practices and enforce water safety laws.
