ILLINOIS FARMERS MAKING PROGRESS ACCORDING TO THE USDA

Illinois farmers continued to make strong planting progress last week according to the US Department of Agriculture.  During the week ending May 25th,  there were an average of 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork. The statewide average temperature was 59.4°F, which is 6.0 degrees below the normal range. Precipitation averaged 1.56 inches, exceeding the normal by 0.63 inches.

 

Topsoil moisture levels were rated as 3% very short, 18% short, 65% adequate, and 14% surplus. Subsoil moisture was reported as 4% very short, 23% short, 59% adequate, and 14% surplus.

 

In terms of crop progress:

Corn planted reached 82%, slightly below the 5-year average of 87%. Corn emerged was at 70%, just above the 5-year average of 69%. Crop condition was rated as 1% very poor, 4% poor, 28% fair, 55% good, and 12% excellent.

 

Soybeans planted reached 75%, matching the 5-year average. Soybeans emerged was at 58%, higher than the 50% average. Soybean conditions were rated as 1% very poor, 4% poor, 33% fair, 53% good, and 9% excellent.

 

Winter wheat headed reached 72%, below the 5-year average of 87%. Winter wheat condition was rated as 1% very poor, 4% poor, 33% fair, 51% good, and 11% excellent.
