By Mark Wells May 28, 2025 | 12:00 PM

An oil well fire south of Clay City Wednesday morning resulted in the injury of one oilfield worker. The incident occurred around 9:30 on a Citation Oil Company lease located directly south of Clay City on Tower Road.

The injured worker sustained burns and was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment. No other injuries were reported. The Clay City Fire Department responded to the scene, working alongside the Cisne, Flora, and Noble fire departments. Cisne Fire Chief, Josh Smith says his department provided additional firefighting foam and manpower to assist in controlling the blaze.

According to a neighbor, the fire started when the well exploded, igniting a Bangert Casing and Pulling unit. The flames then spread to a tank truck operated by Morris Tank Truck Service of Clay City. Witnesses noted that the well was “very gassy,” which contributed to the severity of the incident. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Clay City Fire Department confirmed that the incident is being thoroughly investigated. The name of the injured worker has not been released.
