At Monday night’s meeting of the Wayne City Village Board, Mayor Rocky Hedden made a new appointment for Police Chief of Wayne City after trustees returned from executive session. The mayor appointed Jefferson County resident Jason Settle, a decision that received unanimous board support.
If Settle officially accepts the position, the new chief will work part-time for the village and another officer may be hired to the department later to increase law enforcement coverage of the Wayne City area.
Settle lives in Bluford and currently is employed as a part- time sheriff’s deputy for Jefferson County. Settle is also a lieutenant with the Mount Vernon Fire Department. According to Board members Settle would step down from his position with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department to work for the village but intends to continue working with the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.
The Village has not had a law-enforcement presence, outside of Wayne County Deputies, since September of last year when former Police Chief, Anson Fenton, resigned.
Fenton pled guilty on April 1 in an East St. Louis Federal Court to misapplication of property and transportation of stolen property across state lines. A sentencing hearing for Fenton is set for July 1st and may see him receive up to $250,000 in fines and up to 10 years in prison per count.
