74-year-old Bruce D. Mendenhall, a convicted serial killer and former Albion resident, will not face trial for the 2007 murder of Lucille “Gretna” Carter, an Alabama woman. Mendenhall had previously been charged with her slaying, but the case has now been closed after officials in Alabama recalled the murder warrant.
Carter, a 44-year-old transient from Birmingham, was found dead on July 1st, 2007, on in Birmingham. She was shot in the head with a .22 caliber weapon, with a plastic bag over her head and duct tape around her neck, and her body was dumped nude next to a trash bin on a service road.
The decision not to prosecute was made after discussions with Carter’s family, who expressed satisfaction with the resolution, especially since Mendenhall was recently sentenced to 65 years in prison for the 2022 murder of Carma Purpura in Indianapolis.
Mendenhall is currently serving life sentences in Tennessee for the murders of Samantha D. Winters and Sara Nichole Hulbert, as well as an additional 30-year sentence for attempting to hire an inmate to harm a Nashville detective. He remains in custody of the Indiana Department of Corrections.
Although he will not face trial in Alabama, Mendenhall still has a pending murder charge for the killing of Deborah Ann Glover in Atlanta, Georgia, and is considered a suspect in other cases, including the murders of Sherry Drinkard in Indiana and Robin Bishop in Tennessee.
