ENFIELD VILLAGE BOARD MEETING DRAWS CROWD, ADDRESSES RANGE OF TOPICS BUT TAKES LIMITED ACTION

By Mark Wells Jun 12, 2025 | 11:55 AM

The Enfield Village Board met for nearly three hours Tuesday night, discussing a lengthy agenda but taking minimal formal action. Roughly 25 residents attended the meeting, many of whom came with questions about the Enfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Mayor Maurie Black and the board said they had no information on the facility’s status, only that rumors were circulating.

The board is still seeking someone to fill the trustee seat left vacant by Stephen Griffin. Mayor Black encouraged anyone interested to speak with him directly.

Several village positions remain unfilled, including Utility Worker, Animal Control Officer, Community Center Janitor, and a full-time Police Officer. An interview for the utility worker role is scheduled for Friday, while no candidates have yet stepped forward for the other positions. Trustee Jim Bolin emphasized the Animal Control role is active and pays $200 monthly. Interviews for both the janitor and police officer roles are also being arranged.

White County Sheriff Jordan Weiss attended and assured the board that his department will continue patrolling Enfield in the absence of a local officer. He also informed the board that the county is now issuing e-citations instead of handwritten tickets.

There has been no progress from Ameren regarding needed street lighting, and the board is considering handling the issue internally, though the cost may be high.

Other updates from the meeting included:

The village is researching Christmas light purchases.

The ongoing sewer grant study continues.

A new village truck is expected to arrive this month.

Estimates for Community Center repairs are still being collected.

A $60,000 offer was made for 20 acres of village-owned land behind the park, with the buyer requesting full mineral rights. However, a motion to accept the offer failed due to lack of a second.

Park restroom upgrades will proceed using existing grant funds, with a contractor to assess the project.

John Roberts III of Red Neck Wrestling proposed hosting events in Enfield. The board approved a four-show trial run, with a debut event date to be announced soon.

The village has compiled a list of unkempt properties. Letters will be sent to property owners requesting cleanup or mowing.

Board members briefly discussed possible events for the Fourth of July or other summer activities.

In official actions:

The board approved a resolution to accept the lowest bid from Mt. Carmel Sand and Gravel for MFT-funded work, pending state approval.

They also approved the annual $1,786.73 subscription with Neptune Software for meter reading and hardware maintenance.

A special meeting is scheduled for tomorrow night ( Friday) at 6:30 PM, with a public hearing at 6 PM, pending legal review. The topic will be a proposed ordinance to designate land on the north end of town for a new playground. The item was mistakenly left off Tuesday’s agenda.
