The McLeansboro City Council held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night, lasting just over an hour, with several key items addressed.

Council members approved an ordinance implementing a municipal grocery retailers’ occupation tax and a grocery service occupation tax, replacing the state’s now-repealed 1% grocery tax. The local version is expected to maintain revenue for the city previously collected under the state program.

A first reading of an ordinance involving changes to appointed offices was held, featuring updated language. Final action could come at next month’s meeting.

Zoning Administrator Pat Stevens led discussion on potentially reclassifying zoning at Hyatt’s Addition to allow for modular homes or trailers. No decision was made, and discussions will continue.

Action on the Comptroller’s job description was tabled as talks are still underway.

Under the Consent Agenda, several items were approved:

City fireworks will be held at Lake McLeansboro on Friday, July 4th at dusk, with a rain date of Saturday, July 5th.

While $9,500 was budgeted, the cost increased to $9,761, prompting approval of an FY26 budget amendment.

The City Pool will be closed on July 4th.

Mayoral appointments for Fiscal Year 2026 were confirmed, with no appointment of a Fire Chief at this time.

A resolution was approved to use MFT (Motor Fuel Tax) funds for summer road maintenance under the Illinois Highway Code.

In other business:

Jeff Lueke donated $500 to the McLeansboro Fire Department.

The IEPA conducted a sewer inspection, finding all systems in compliance. The next review will be in five years.

After a 40-minute executive session, the council confirmed that the City Administrator’s contract runs retroactively from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, with a salary adjustment effective with the next pay period.
