Today, Americans observe Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in recognition of the day:
Retail & Grocery Stores: Most major retailers and grocery chains will remain open.
Mail Delivery: The U.S. Postal Service is closed and will not deliver mail. However, UPS and FedEx services are operating as usual.
Financial Markets: Closed. The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will not be trading in observance of the holiday.
Banks: Most banks are closed, as Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve holiday. Online banking and ATMs remain accessible.
Juneteenth, officially declared a federal holiday in 2021, honors June 19, 1865—the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
