GIANNOUILAS AWARDS OVER $1 MILLION IN TECH GRANTS TO UNDERSERVED ILLINOIS LIBRARIES

Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias has announced that more than $1 million in technology grants is being awarded to 88 public libraries across the state, including three in Wayne and Edwards counties. The Albion Public Library, Wayne City Kissner Public Library, and West Salem Public Library will each receive $12,500 in funding to upgrade their technology and improve services.

The grants aim to help libraries in underserved communities that have a low tax base relative to the population they serve. Depending on service population size, libraries received either $27,500 or $12,500.

“Libraries play a significant role in our communities, providing a place for every Illinoisan to connect, learn and explore,” Giannoulias said. “We have a responsibility to ensure that all libraries, regardless of their community’s location or wealth, have the resources to meet the needs of residents and expand their offerings, particularly when it comes to technology.”

Libraries were encouraged to tailor their grant applications to their patrons’ technology needs. Eligible projects include upgrades to hardware and software, increased Wi-Fi and internet access, expanded e-resources, ADA-compliant website improvements, and technologies for patrons with disabilities.

The program addresses inequities caused by differing property values across Illinois, which impact the funding public libraries receive through local taxes. The 88 libraries awarded this year follow the 113 libraries that received similar grants in 2024, based on the same state tax base data.

The funding provides a much-needed boost to smaller community libraries as they work to modernize and meet growing digital demands.
