IDOT WARNS DRIVERS TO WATCH FOR PAVEMENT FAILURES AS TEMPERATURES RISE

By Mark Wells Jun 24, 2025 | 11:59 AM

With extremely high temperatures and increasing humidity in the forecast, the Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to watch for pavement failures on roadways across the state.

These failures, also known as blowouts, happen when prolonged heat causes road surfaces to expand and buckle or break apart, leading to hazardous and uneven conditions. The risk of buckling increases with precipitation and humidity.

IDOT encourages the public to report any pavement issues by calling (800) 452-4368 or by contacting local law enforcement through 911.
