At least 16 people from 13 states have been hospitalized and three have died due to a possible listeria contamination linked to prepackaged chicken alfredo meals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC is specifically warning consumers about FreshRealm Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo meals, which were sold at Walmart and Kroger stores across the U.S. The meals have since been removed from store shelves, but health officials are urging anyone who may have purchased them to check their freezers and dispose of them immediately.
Listeria is a dangerous bacteria that can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of listeria infection may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, or diarrhea, and in more severe cases, it can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or death.
The CDC advises consumers to avoid eating the product, sanitize any surfaces the meals may have touched, and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms of infection develop.
