ILLINOIS CROP PROGRESS REPORT SHOWS SLIGHT LAG IN CORN, WHEAT HARVEST

The USDA has released its latest crop progress and weather report for Illinois, showing that while most planting is complete, crop emergence and condition remain mixed as of the week ending June 22nd.  Corn emergence is reported at 85%, below the 5-year average of 97%. Crop condition ratings came in at 74% good to excellent, with 3% very poor, 5% poor, 18% fair, 57% good, and 17% excellent.

Soybean planting is nearly complete at 95%, close to the 5-year average of 97%, and 90% of the crop has emerged, just shy of the 5-year average of 93%. Soybean condition ratings were 4% very poor, 7% poor, 28% fair, 46% good, and 15% excellent.

Winter wheat harvest is progressing slowly, with only 17% harvested compared to the 5-year average of 40%. Condition ratings showed 10% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 48% good, and 13% excellent.

Farmers had 4.9 days suitable for fieldwork last week. The statewide average temperature was 77.3°F, which is 4.1 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.91 inches, slightly above the normal 0.76 inches.

Topsoil moisture: 3% very short, 19% short, 63% adequate, 15% surplus

Subsoil moisture: 4% very short, 23% short, 58% adequate, 15% surplus

 

With hot temperatures and above-average rainfall, conditions have been mostly favorable, but crop development is still trailing historical averages in some areas.
