Dansby Swanson grounded out to end the game with two runners in scoring position. Seiya Suzuki and Nico Hoerner each homered in the losing effort, while Jameson Taillon was charged with his fifth loss after surrendering eight runs on eight hits in four innings. The Cubs remain in first place in the NL Central at 46-and-33. They send Matthew Boyd to the mound against St. Louis tonight.

NBA Draft Begins Tonight:
(Brooklyn, NY) — The next generation of NBA stars take the first step in their career when the 2025 draft tips off from Brooklyn. The first round of the draft begins tonight and the Dallas Mavericks are in possession of the top pick. The expectation is for the Mavs to select Duke freshman Cooper Flagg with the number one pick. Rutgers stars Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are also expected to be taken early. The San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets and Utah Jazz round out the top five.
Hawks Acquire Kristaps Porzingis From Celtics:
(Atlanta, GA) — The Hawks are swinging a major deal ahead of the NBA draft. ESPN reports that Kristaps Porzingis is heading to Atlanta from Boston in a three-team trade also involving Brooklyn. Georges Niang is going to the Celtics along with a second-round pick while the Nets are getting Terance Mann and the Hawks’ 22nd-overall selection. Atlanta is also receiving a second-rounder as part of the deal. Porzingis averaged almost 20 points in 42 games last season.
Report: Mavs’ Irving To Decline Option, Re-Sign With Team:
Nine-time NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving is planning to stay put in Dallas. ESPN is reporting that Irving is declining his 43-million-dollar player option and intends to sign a three-year, 119-million-dollar contract with the franchise. The deal will include a player option for the 2027-28 season. Irving was limited to 50 games last season after suffering a torn left ACL in March. He finished the season averaging 24.7 points in his second full season with the Mavs.
Sale For Minnesota Timberwolves, Lynx Franchise Approved:
(Minneapolis, MN) — The NBA says the sale of the Minnesota Timberwolves is official. The league announced the sale of the Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx after a unanimous vote made by the NBA Board of Governors Tuesday. The franchises are being sold for one-and-a-half-billion-dollars by Glen Taylor to a group led by former baseball All-Star Alex Rodriguez and businessman Marc Lore. Taylor attempted to cancel the deal last year, but a court-ordered arbitration ruling favored Rodriguez and Lore. Lore will serve as the governor of the Timberwolves, while Rodriguez takes that role for the Lynx.
Report: Pelicans Acquire Poole From Wizards:
The Pelicans and Wizards made a trade one day prior to the 2025 NBA Draft. ESPN reports that New Orleans is sending CJ McCollum, Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the 40th overall selection in this year’s draft. Poole was Washington’s leading scorer this past season with 20.5 points per game and will now team up with Zion Williamson in the Big Easy. McCollum averaged 21.1 points per game for the lowly Pels and will now join a young Wizards roster.
NFL Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Says 2025 Likely His Last Season:
Longtime NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers is “pretty sure” he’s hanging up the cleats after the upcoming season. Rodgers, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this month, made the comment on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday. The multi-time Pro Bowler is entering his 21st season after spending the last two years with the New York Jets. Rodgers started his career with the Green Bay Packers and led the team to a Super Bowl title in 2010. The University of California product is currently seventh all-time in career passing yards and fifth in passing touchdowns.
Whit Merrifield Retires Following Nine MLB Seasons:
A player who twice led Major League Baseball in hits is hanging up his bat and glove. Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield has announced his retirement following a nine-season career in the bigs. Merrifield led the majors in stolen bases three times and finished his career with a .280 batting average to go along with 94 home runs, 485 RBIs, 29 triples and 218 steals. The 36-year-old played the first six-and-a-half seasons of his career with the Kansas City Royals before also suiting up for the Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves.
Hockey Hall Of Fame 2025 Class Announced:
(Toronto) — Eight hockey legends are headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class. The prestigious museum made the announcement for its eight member class headlined by Alexander Mogilny [[ moe-GIL-nee ]] and Zdeno Chára [[ z’DEHN-oh CHAH-rah ]]. Mogilny has been on the ballot for more than 15 years, which stands as a record for the longest wait for induction. Chára is the NHL’s all-time leader in games played by a defenseman. Jennifer Botterill [[ BOT-uh-ril ]] and Brianna Decker are two women’s players joining the Hall. Jack Parker and Danièle Sauvageau [[ so-vah-zho ]] are being enshrined as two builders. An induction ceremony to the Hall of Fame in Toronto is set for November.
Islanders Not Trading Top Pick In NHL Draft:
The Islanders are keeping the lines open but will likely keep the first overall pick in this week’s NHL Draft. General manager Mathieu Darche said Tuesday that he is not trading the top pick, but is doing his due diligence to improve the team. Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer is among the top prospects that have impressed Darche during the scouting process. Saginaw Spirit forward Michael Misa and Swedish defenseman Anton Frondell are also expected to be taken at the top of the draft.
