High school students are being offered a unique opportunity to get involved in the democratic process ahead of the 2026 election—by serving as student election judges. Even if they aren’t old enough to vote yet, qualified students can help run elections in their communities.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
Be a U.S. citizen
Be a junior or senior in good standing (or enrolled in college/community college)
Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA
Obtain written approval from a parent or guardian and their school principal
Complete election judge training
Meet standard election judge qualifications
One important rule to note: Only one student per political party per precinct is allowed.
In addition, students as young as 16 can pre-register to vote when they get their driver’s license at the DMV. Their application will be saved and automatically activated when they become eligible.
To be able to vote in the primary election, students must turn 18 by November 3, 2026. Any student interested with questions and for more information can call the Wayne County Clerk’s office at 618-842-5182.
