Unemployment Numbers

Unemployment in Illinois increased in the month of May,according to numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Some unemployment numbers for area counties included Clay County at 4.2 percent.  That was up six tenths of a percent from April.  Jefferson County’s rate for May was 4.1 percent, up a half percent from April’s number.  Marion County’s unemployment rate for May was 3.8 percent, up from 3.5 percent in April, but down from 4.7 percent in May of last year.

The numbers included a labor force of just over 16,000 with 603 on the unemployment rolls, up 40 from the previous month.  The IDES reported the biggest increases in employment were in the private education-health services, government and construction.
