ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HOSTING FREE RECYCLING PROGRAM

By Mark Wells Jul 7, 2025 | 5:55 AM

The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is inviting farmers and agrichemical facilities to participate in a free agrichemical container recycling program aimed at environmental sustainability. Starting mid-July and running through August, various collection sites across Illinois will gather containers to be recycled into shipping pallets.

Only high-density polyethylene, #2 plastic agrichemical containers that are clean and dry are eligible for the program. Metal and household pesticide containers are not accepted. Participants must rinse the containers thoroughly, remove all caps, valves, metal parts, labels, booklets, and foil seals. Additionally, plastic drums must have their tops and bottoms cut off, and the sides cut from top to bottom.

For Mini-Bulk and Intermediate Bulk containers, specific preparations are required: Mini-Bulk (cage) containers should be cut into separate top, bottom, and side pieces with fittings discarded; Intermediate Bulk Containers should be cut into one-foot square pieces, with fittings removed. G. Phillips and Sons, LLC offers pick-up services for these containers throughout the year. Interested parties can contact them at 678-232-6047 for more information.

This recycling initiative is a collaborative effort involving the IDOA, Agriculture Container Recycling Council, GROWMARK, Inc., Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, G. Phillips and Sons, LLC, Illinois Farm Bureau, and University of Illinois Extension.

A special one-day recycling event will be held at Wabash Valley Serv Co in Ellery on July 23rd. Additionally, a permanent drop-off location is available at Klein Flying Service in Carmi.
