RAILROAD CROSSING WORK NEARING COMPLETION IN FAIRFIELD

By Mark Wells Jul 9, 2025 | 5:57 AM

Ongoing maintenance work on Norfolk Southern railroad crossings in Fairfield is nearly finished, according to city officials.

While some residents have voiced frustration over increased travel times around the county and specifically in Fairfield, Mayor Gary Moore says Norfolk Southern provided ample notice ahead of the project. The upgrades are aimed at making the crossings smoother and safer for motorists.

Crews have been working on multiple crossings throughout the city, and Mayor Moore emphasized that they’ve been careful to leave access routes open for emergency vehicles during the process.

“There are just a few more crossings left to complete,” Moore stated, assuring residents the end is in sight.

The railroad maintenance project stretches beyond Fairfield, with work also taking place east and west of the city along the Norfolk Southern tracks, including areas east and south of the Merriam Crossroads and south of Kline’s Corner off IL Hwy 15.
