Washington Nationals 8, St. Louis Cardinals 2         The St. Louis Cardinals surrendered three home runs during an 8-2 loss to the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals gave up three runs in the top of the first and trailed the rest of the way. Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn each drove in a run in the losing effort, while Andre Pallante was charged with his fifth loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in six innings. St. Louis has dropped six of eight. The Cardinals are in third place in the NL Central at 49-and-44. They send Miles Mikolas to the mound this evening. First pitch is at 6:45PM.

The Northsiders surrendered two runs in the bottom of the first and trailed the rest of the way. Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson each drove in a run in the losing effort, while Cade Horton was charged with his third loss after allowing four runs on six hits in four-and-two-third innings. The Cubs remain in first place in the NL Central at 54-and-38. They send Colin Rea to the mound against the Twins this afternoon.

Oklahoma City star center Chet Holmgren has agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach 250-million-dollars. The new deal does not include a player or team option. The 23-year-old averaged 15 points and 2.2 blocks in 32 regular-season games last season and was a major contributor on the team’s run through the postseason and to the NBA title. He is one of just three players all time with 150 made three-pointers and 250 blocks through his first two NBA seasons.

(Salt Lake City, UT) — The Utah Jazz are mourning the death of former head coach and general manager Frank Layden. Layden became the team’s basketball coach two years after the franchise landed in Salt Lake City from New Orleans, and led the team from 1981 to 1988. Basketball Hall of Famers Karl Malone and John Stockton were both drafted during his coaching tenure. Layden was 93-years old.

Group B in the West includes the Lakers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Mavericks and Pelicans. Group C in the East includes the Bucks, Knicks, Bulls, Heat and Hornets. Group C in the West includes the Rockets, Nuggets, Warriors, Trail Blazers and Spurs.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders is advocating for a salary cap in college football in order to help even out the competitive landscape in a sport that is quickly becoming more similar to the NFL. The Pro Football Hall of Famer spoke at Big 12 media day and said that the sport is being hurt by an unregulated system with player movement and finances. The 57-year-old declined to comment on his recent health issues but said that he will be back on campus in Boulder soon.

Joel Dahmen, Ryan Gerard and Marcel Schneider will be among the first group of players teeing off round one at The Renaissance Club.

(London) — The Wimbledon semifinals in men’s and women’s singles are set. On the men’s side, top-seeded Jannik Sinner advanced following a win in straight sets over 10th-seeded American Ben Shelton. Sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic punched his ticket to the semifinals following a four-set victory over 22nd-seeded Flavio Cobolli. Sinner and Djokovic play Friday for a chance to play the winner of Friday’s other semifinal match between second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and fifth-seeded American Taylor Fritz. On the women’s side, eighth-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated 19th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova while Belinda Bencic pulled off a straight sets upset win over seventh-seeded Mirra Andreeva. The women’s semifinals take place Thursday with Swiatek taking on Bencic and top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka facing 13th-seeded American Amanda Anisimova.
