The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced Friday that the recent measles outbreak in Southern Illinois has officially ended.
A total of eight connected cases were confirmed in the region during April and May. Two unrelated cases were also identified in Cook County, but did not lead to additional spread or constitute an outbreak.
No new cases have been reported in Illinois since May 22nd, and with two full incubation periods (42 days) passing without further infections, IDPH declared the outbreak over.
Health officials credited a swift response by state and local agencies for minimizing the spread.
IDPH continues to urge residents to stay up to date on measles vaccinations, which remain the most effective way to protect both children and adults.
