A proposal to honor Vietnam War hero Pfc. Kenny Kays by renaming a stretch of Illinois Route 15 in Wayne County has stalled in the Illinois State Senate.
Senate Joint Resolution 17, introduced by State Senator Terri Bryant of Murphysboro, was assigned to a study committee on February 4th and has not advanced since. If approved, the measure would designate the portion of Route 15 from the west edge of Fairfield to its intersection with Wayne County Highway 10 as the “Pfc. Kenny Kays Memorial Highway.”
Kays, who served as a medic with the 101st Airborne Division, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during a May 7th, 1970 firefight in Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam. Despite losing his lower leg to an explosion, he continued to treat fellow wounded soldiers, saving numerous lives before accepting treatment for his own injuries. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in November 1973.
So far, the bill has progressed just 25% through the legislative process, with no further movement reported since its assignment to committee.
