ILLINOIS IMPLEMENTS NEW CDL MEDICAL CERTIFICATION PROCESS WITH FMCSA INTEGRATION

Illinois joined the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry Integration Initiative as of June 30th, changing how Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) medical certifications are processed.

Under the new system, medical providers are now responsible for submitting the results of CDL physical exams directly to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office will no longer accept medical certificate submissions at CDL facilities. Drivers must contact their medical provider directly if any information is missing or incorrect.

Additionally, new CDL applicants or those applying for a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) may need to self-certify under a category other than Non-Excepted Interstate (NI). Once their Illinois CDL record is established, they can update their certification at any CDL facility.

Drivers who operate only Covered Farm Vehicles (CFVs), those with farm plates, are exempt from medical card requirements, regardless of whether they hold a CDL or a Non-CDL license.

However, CDL holders must still self-certify as Excepted Interstate (EI) or Excepted Intrastate (EA) at a CDL facility to reflect that they are driving only CFVs.

These changes aim to streamline compliance and improve data accuracy. The Secretary of State’s Office encourages drivers to stay informed and reach out to their medical providers or local CDL facility with any questions. For more information, visit ILSOS.gov.
