Heavy rainfall drenched Southeastern Illinois Saturday morning, causing widespread flooding and road closures throughout the region. At WFIW Radio in Fairfield, 2.48 inches of rain was recorded during the downpour.
In downtown Flora, floodwaters quickly overwhelmed streets, with traffic pushing water into local businesses. Several businesses were forced to close to keep employees safe. The Flora Police Department urged residents to stay home and avoid flooded roadways, reporting multiple vehicles stranded in high water.
By 4:30 p.m., the Flora Volunteer Fire Department noted that floodwaters had begun to recede across most of the city, though a few rural roads near town remained impassable.
According to the Clay County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA), Flora Rescue was called to perform a water rescue on Blue Mound Road south of Coon Creek, where a man and his dog were safely rescued from a stranded vehicle.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning that remains in effect for the Little Wabash River below Clay City until further notice. Authorities urge residents to remain cautious and monitor local updates.
