(Mt. Vernon) — Two individuals have been confirmed dead following reports of gunfire just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning. According to Mt. Vernon Police Department Assistant Chief, Travis Chapman, officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Littons Ambulance, United Medical Response, and Mt.Vernon Fire Department responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 600 block of South 15th Street. Chapman says that upon arrival, officers discovered several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All victims were transported to local hospitals. Chapman says two individuals were confirmed dead as a result of their injuries, Zomarrius Williams, a 20-year-old male from Mt. Vernon, IL and Demonta Woodward, a 26-year-old male from Mounds, IL. Five additional victims received treatment for gunshot-related injuries. He says this remains an active and ongoing investigation. Chapman says that Jerria Smith, a 22-year-old female from Mt. Vernon, IL has been arrested and charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Obstruction of Justice. Chapman says he urges anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department immediately or Crimestoppers.
