The Clay County Health Department, in partnership with the Health for Generations Coalition, is preparing to launch a new Community Health Assessment Survey as part of the state-mandated Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs. Required every five years, IPLAN helps certified health departments like CCHD identify and address key community health issues. Clay County’s current health priorities, set through 2027, are Access to Care, Heart Disease and Obesity, and Behavioral Health. CCHD says progress has already been made across all three areas. CCHD has expanded free transportation options for medical visits, opened a tele-lab, and launched free dental clinics for qualifying adults. Clay County Hospital’s diabetes prevention and education programs now serve over 300 residents, and fresh produce is distributed to promote healthy eating. Senior fitness programs like SilverSneakers and aerobics are also being offered. On the behavioral health front, Clay County Hospital and Friendship Connection have expanded services and offer weekly recovery support meetings. Community members are encouraged to share feedback or personal stories by contacting April Carruthers at 618-662-4406. A new survey to help shape future health goals will be available in August on the CCHD website, Facebook page, or by calling or visiting the department.
