Diesel Fuel Spill Clean Up Continues

By Tony Collins Jul 31, 2025 | 6:37 AM

The clean-up of a major diesel fuel spill that originated at the former Fairfield light plant is still ongoing. The leak was first noticed on July 6th in Johnson Creek and is believed to have been caused by vandals opening the valves on diesel storage tanks. Officials have not released an estimate of the amount of fuel that was leaked. Last week, the large diesel storage tanks were removed from the old Fairfield Light Plant and completely emptied. Fairfield Fire Chief, Andrew Miller, states that EPA officials will continue to oversee the cleanup operations, including soil remediation operations to remove contaminated soil in the area. These have not yet begun but, are expected to start in the next couple of weeks.
