During the Tuesday meeting of the Wayne County Retired Teachers Association’s (WCRTA) at the Cisne Community Center, the organization awarded its annual scholarship for future educators to Lainie Clark.
The award was presented by David Savage in the absence of Michael Simpson, Scholarship Committee Chairman. Clark, a graduate of Fairfield Community High School, is currently studying at Eastern Illinois University and plans to graduate in 2027 with a degree in English education.
Members enjoyed a catered meal provided by Matt Kinney before President Sharon Maguire led the Pledge of Allegiance and welcomed guest Brooke Serbousek, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) state membership and community outreach coordinator. Serbousek shared updates on IRTA, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and discussed the organization’s advocacy efforts, scholarships, and financial assistance programs.
During the business portion of the meeting, Maguire announced that the late Kathy Richardson will be honored at the upcoming state IRTA convention for her significant contributions to WCRTA.
Door prizes were awarded, with Tammy Mugrage winning a free meal at the next meeting, and Lou Campbell taking home the 50/50 cash prize.
The next WCRTA meeting is scheduled for October 7 at the Wayne City First United Methodist Church.
