Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to pull over when approaching emergency vehicles or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated.

The reminder comes after a traffic crash involving an ISP trooper Friday on Illinois Route 34 a mile west of Harco Road in Saline County.  The trooper was on the scene of a previous fatal crash when their squad car was hit by a driver who failed to move over.  State police identified the driver of the vehicle that hit the squad car as 66 year old Sandra S. Kahl of Thompsonville, IL.  Kahl was cited for Move Over Law violations and Failure To Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

The fatal traffic crash had occurred early Friday morning near Galatia, and resulted in one person dead and two others injured.  The two people injured were airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment of their injuries.

State police say this year, there have been eight Move Over Law-related crashes.  Last year the ISP suffered 27 Move Over Law-related crashes with 12 troopers injured and one death.  In 2023 ISP had 21 Move Over-related crashes resulting in seven troopers being injured.  A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of at least $250 up to $10,000 for a first offense.  If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s drivers license will be suspended for at least six months to two years.
