The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed that a small earthquake struck the Tri-State region late Friday night.

According to USGS data, the magnitude 2.6 quake occurred at 10:06 p.m. on Friday, with an epicenter near Cynthiana, Indiana. The earthquake originated 18.8 kilometers (about 11.6 miles) underground.

A total of 57 people reported feeling the tremor, with reports coming from as far south as Evansville and east into Warrick County.

The Tri-State lies within the Illinois Basin–Ozark Dome region, which borders the New Madrid Seismic Zone and spans parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas—stretching from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis.

While earthquakes in this area occur less frequently than in the western United States, they are often felt across a much broader region. The largest historical quake in the region was a magnitude 5.4 that struck in 1968, causing damage in southern Illinois.

According to USGS, moderately damaging earthquakes tend to occur in the region every decade or two, while smaller quakes are typically felt once or twice a year.
