Five Fairfield residents are facing felony charges after allegedly breaking into the Fairfield Light Plant and causing more than $100,000 in damage.

Charged with criminal damage to government-supported property and burglary are Terry Keele, 55; Amanda Garner, 45; Marshall Lloyd Garrison, 40; Anthony Vasoli, 21; and Bobby Wayne Cottrill, 48, all of Fairfield.

According to criminal information filed by State’s Attorney Kyle Ellis, the five are accused of entering the light plant between April 1st and July 16th of this year and damaging ceilings, machinery, and other equipment. The extent of the destruction led to the felony criminal damage charge, while the burglary charges stem from allegedly entering the facility with the intent to commit theft.

Authorities say the alleged criminal activity also caused a major diesel fuel leak. The spill was first detected on July 6th in Johnson Creek, with the source traced to large fuel storage tanks at the plant, located at 106 NW Sixth Street.

Since the discovery, a cleanup crew has been working to contain and remediate the spill, including removing contaminated soil. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Fairfield Fire Department are overseeing the cleanup effort.
