The National Weather Service in Paducah has extended a Heat Advisory for portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri through 7 p.m. CDT (8 p.m. EDT) Tuesday.
Forecasters warn that daily heat index values could reach up to 108 degrees, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s combined with high humidity. The conditions may lead to an increased risk of heat-related illnesses.
Safety tips from the NWS include:
Drink plenty of fluids
Stay in an air-conditioned location if possible
Avoid prolonged sun exposure
Check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and vulnerable
Those working or spending time outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, schedule strenuous activities for early morning or evening, and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The advisory remains in effect until Tuesday evening.
With the dry conditions recently, some Abnormally Dry conditions have crept back into far southwestern Illinois, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map. Moderate drought conditions are noted in east-central and northeastern Illinois.
The extended forecasts call for near normal temperatures and below normal precipitation in the six to ten day outlook, and above normal temperatures and normal precipitation in the 8 to 14 day outlook, which runs through August 29th.
